Using pulsed neutron transmission for crystalline phase imaging and analysis

چکیده
The total scattering cross section of polycrystalline materials in the thermal neutron region contains valuable information about the scattering processes that neutrons undergo as they pass through the sample. In particular, it displays characteristic discontinuities or Bragg edges of selected families of lattice planes. We have developed a pixelated time-of-flight transmission detector able to record these features and in this paper we examine the potential for quantitative phase analysis and crystalline phase imaging through the examination of a simple two-phase test object. Two strategies for evaluation of the absolute phase volumes spath lengthsd are examined. The first approach is based on the evaluation of the Bragg edge amplitude using basic profile information. The second approach focuses on the information content of certain regions of the spectrum using a Rietveld-type fit after first identifying the phases via the characteristic edges. The phase distribution is determined and the coarse chemical species radiographic image reconstructed. The accuracy of this method is assessed. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1861144g

Non-Destructive Study of Bulk Crystallinity and Elemental Composition of Natural Gold Single Crystal Samples by Energy-Resolved Neutron Imaging
Energy-resolved neutron imaging enables non-destructive analyses of bulk structure and elemental composition, which can be resolved with high spatial resolution at bright pulsed spallation neutron sources due to recent developments and improvements of neutron counting detectors. This technique, suitable for many applications, is demonstrated here with a specific study of ~5-10 mm thick natural ...
متن کاملExplosives Detection Performance of -rays Interrogation for Robots and Vehicles
The performance of a explosives detection system based on the pulsed fast/thermal neutron analysis technique was assessed using Monte Carlo simulations. The aim was to develop and implement simulation methods, to support and advance the data analysis techniques of the characteristic -ray spectra, potentially leading to elemental characterization of innocuous objects using the full spectrum anal...
متن کاملPassive neutron area monitor with CR39
Background: In high-intensity, mixed and pulsed neutron fields the use of spectrometers or area monitors with active detectors is useless in these conditions neutron measuring devices must have a passive detector. Here a passive neutron area monitor with CR39 track detector was designed and the response was calculated. Materials and Methods: The response of a passive neutron area monitor with C...
متن کاملPLD-Assisted VLS Growth of Aligned Ferrite Nanorods, Nanowires, and NanobeltssSynthesis, and Properties
We report here a systematic synthesis and characterization of aligned R-Fe2O3 (hematite), -Fe2O3, and Fe3O4 (magnetite) nanorods, nanobelts, and nanowires on alumina substrates using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. The presence of spherical gold catalyst particles at the tips of the nanostructures indicates selective growth via the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism. Through a series of...
متن کاملNON-DESTRUCTIVE IN-SITU REAL-TIME MEASUREMENTS OF STRUCTURAL PHASE TRANSITIONS USING NEUTRON TRANSMISSION, S. Vogel, H.-G. Priesmeyer, M. Bourke, E. Ustundag, J.C. Hanan, pp. 75-84
In recent years, a novel technique has been developed to study the kinetics of structural phase transitions in solids. The method is based on the Bragg-edge phenomenon associated with the transmission of thermal neutrons through a material. In a transmitted spectrum the neutrons that have interacted with the sample are missing, and it is possible to derive information concerning the structure o...
